Observation Narrative
This plot is located in a slough at the back edge of the bottomland represented by plot SOUT033. This site has a longer hydroperiod of deeper flooding than most of the bottomland, and supports a forest strongly dominated by Nyssa aquatica, Saururus cernuus, and other flood-tolerant species. Scattered trees of Fraxinus profunda constitute the only significant overstory associates of the Nyssa, while the open understory is composed mainly of Fraxinus caroliniana and hardwood saplings. This stand is probably the same age as the adjacent mixed hardwood stand.
